Be emergency-ready
Know your community's evacuation routes and emergency shelter locations. If there's enough time, photograph major household items and valuables and make sure important documents are safe. Turn off gas, electricity and water if power lines are down or before you evacuate your property.

Secure your space
Even a few centimetres of flood water can cause thousands of dollars in damage. Installing flood-proofing measures such as a sump pump or backwater valve, waterproofing your basement, or making sure your electrical panel is not at ground level can help lower your flood risk and potentially your premium.
